TV news is our main channel of information. Politics, economics, sport, fashion, technology, etc., are topics we learn about thanks to the TV news we watch at lunch or dinner.

Our task is to prepare a series of news to be broadcasted (that is, read, recorded and uploaded to YouTube). The following hand-out will guide the preparation this special TV news broadcast.

The recording of this broadcast will take place on January 25th and 27th during the English lesson. Please consider attending these two lessons in order to be assessed. If there is any reason for you not to be present on these days, please let me know as soon as possible.

A commercial

One of the most important formats to get information in the Consumer Era are TV and radio commercials.

TV and radio commercials may be seen as a persuasive structure to make us buy a product. Sometimes they provide ample information about the product; on some other occassions they use our feelings to impel us to buy with appealing images and sounds (i.e., luxury, sex, power, attractiveness, etc.).

Your task now is to produce and record a 30-seconds TV commercial. As with the previous video clip, you can use the technique you prefer: still images, stop motion or drama.

Once you finish your video clip, upload it to YouTube.

The deadline is December 21st.

Your own blog

Our second task is to create a blog. Visit Blogger and create your own blog: choose your favourite look and layout! Remember to add links to your mates' blogs!

Now, you must start writing your first posts. To begin with, try to adjust your ideas and your text to your English level; keep it simple and clear, although you should take some risk on every post: a new word, a new expression can work! Then, writing is not a linear task, but a cycle: think, draft, edit, draft, edit,...

Your blog must include three posts, at least: your own personal introduction (including a description of yourself - practise here!!), a problem or issue that worries you and a plan to solve it. By the way, posts do not include just text, they also have images, videos and links; so, do not forget to include these complements in yout post. Here you can find two different examples:

Finally, comments are also an important element of the blogosphere. So, pay a visit to your mates' blogs and write comments on their posts. At least one comment in each blog is expected from you.

The deadline to finish your blog is November 30th.

Notice: Please, take your time but be honest! Don't use automatic translators (which produce very poor texts, sometimes with plenty of mistakes). You can use dictionaries or other resources, but make the effort of writing it yourself.

What's the word on the street?

Sesame Street Muppets teach children all around the world the meaning of "words" in a very famous podcast in video (or videocast): What's the word on the street? You can find more information here.

Choose one word and prepare your own videocast to explain its meaning. Study how Sesame Street does it, prepare a script with the images and the dialogues and the LIGHTS, CAMERA and ACTION!

When you finish recording and editing your video clip, upload it to YouTube.

The deadline os November 4th.

Portfolio Europeo de las Lenguas

El Consejo de Europa difunde, a partir de 2001, dos documentos importantes para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de lenguas: el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas y el Portfolio Europeo de las Lenguas (PEL)

El PEL es una herramienta de reflexión y evaluación de tus experiencias lingüísticas e interculturales. Está formado por tres elementos: Pasaporte, Biografía y Dossier.

El Pasaporte pretende mostrar de manera concisa quién eres en relación con las lenguas; la Biografía es más narrativa y nos permite profundizar en tus experiencias de aprendizaje y uso de las lenguas así como tus experiencias interculturales a lo largo de la vida. Finalmente, el Dossier recoge tus prácticas discursivas en las lenguas que consideres.

Ahora, al comienzo de nuestra asignagura, vamos a utilizar el PEL para autoevaluarnos:

DIALANG o la autoevaluación en red

DIALANG es una herramienta de calidad para la evaluación on-line, gratuita, completa y multilingüe. En su página oficial podemos leer que

DIALANG ofrece tests de diferentes habilidades lingüísticas, cuidadosamente diseñados y validados, junto a una extensa gama de comentarios (feedback) y consejos especializados sobre como mejorar sus conocimientos.

DIALANG también ofrece actividades de autoevaluación científicamente validadas porque actualmente está ampliamente reconocido que ser capaz de valorar los propios conocimientos lingüísticos es una parte importante del aprendizaje de una lengua.

DIALANG no expide certificados. Le permite a usted averiguar qué nivel tiene y dónde están sus puntos fuertes y débiles, de manera que usted pueda decidir cómo desarrollar mejor su dominio de una lengua.

DIALANG le ayudará a llevar el control de su propio aprendizaje lingüístico y aumentará su conciencia, tanto de lo que usted puede hacer en este momento, como de lo que significa saber una lengua.

DIALANG es el sistema de evaluación lingüística más importante basado en el "Marco de referencia común europeo" del Consejo de Europa, que se ha convertido, en Europa, en el marco de referencia más ampliamente reconocido en el campo del aprendizaje de lenguas.

Las instrucciones a seguir son bien sencillas (tomadas de la propia web de DIALANG):

Primero, hay que descargar dos archivos: el entorno de ejecución JAVA (10.5 Mb; descargar, guardar y ejecutar en primer lugar) y el propio DIALANG (idem; 2.5 Mb).
Al instalar DIALANG se crea un icono en la pantalla y pulsando en éste comenzamos la evaluación.
Primero elija la lengua en la que usted desea recibir instrucciones y comentarios (feedback).
A continuación seleccione la lengua y la habilidad concreta (comprensión lectora, comprensión oral, etc.) en la que usted quiere hacer un test.
DIALANG empieza con un test de nivel que evalúa en términos generales su nivel en la lengua que usted ha elegido. Esto se hace con un test sobre sus conocimientos de palabras de esa lengua.
Si usted elige comprensión lectora, comprensión oral o expresión escrita, se le invita a que juzgue sus propias habilidades lingüísticas contestando a un cuestionario de autoevaluación.
Luego hace usted el test en la habilidad que usted elige. Si usted completa el test de nivel o el cuestionario, el sistema usa sus respuestas para adecuar el test a sus conocimientos. Esto reduce las posibilidades de que le sean presentados ejercicios que sean demasiado fáciles o demasiado difíciles.
Después de completar un test, el sistema le ofrece una amplia gama de comentarios (feedback) y consejos. Usted elige lo que quiere ver.
Sus resultados:

su nivel en la escala del Consejo de Europa
para la mayor parte de las habilidades, una indicación de lo que su nivel significa
el resultado de su test de nivel y lo que implica con relación a la amplitud de sus conocimientos de palabras
comentarios (feedback) sobre su autoevaluación
una revisión de sus respuestas - las que usted ha tenido bien y las que ha tenido mal - y cuál era la respuesta correcta

DIALANG no permite guardar los resultados. Por eso debe recordar o bien tomar nota de su nivel o bien pulcar el botón "Impr pant" de su teclado, que imprimirá la imagen que tenga en ese momento en pantalla.

Mi recomendación es que te evalúes en castellano (o tu lengua materna, si está disponible) antes que en inglés. De esta forma podrás conocer un nivel C (castellano) antes que un B o un A.

"English for teachers" is a blog for and by the students attending "English as a Foreign Language and EFLT". It will reflect the activities, the discussions, the feelings and the atmosphere of this semester experience at this subject matter as well as it will be our meeting point out of class.

The easiest way to write a post at "E for T" is by e-mail. You can use the address ftsaez.efort (at) blogger.com to write. They will be received and posted by Blogger automatically (but it takes some time, be patient!).

You can also write comments to a post. It is a good way of interacting with other people to give your opinion or offer another alternative.

Every day one of us will write a post accounting for each day's activities. The post can be written in Spanish or English and will be uncensored; only information absent from a post and which is considered relevant for the understanding of the activity will be added (in brackets and small font).

Thank you for the effort to all the students participanting in this experience!
